Large Bellarmine with Bearded Face and Body Cartouche.. Pottery. Bellarmine. Large round stoneware jug. Salt Glaze. Half Gallon 280 mm. 1700s
Very Good. (7.1). 18 x 13 mm chip to right rear outer lip. 5 x 5 mm flake to the outer left side of the original handle. Several chips and flakes around the base edge, being flared out these are prone to this chipping, I even note that at least one is glazed over so they even obtain these during making at times. Crack to right side of the face, another to right of this that it joins, this one goes down to the right shoulder as a fine hairline, where another hairline goes around to the handle, where it meets another hairline which goes up to the top of the lip. These are all hard to see. Patch of wear through the glaze below the handle. Some other glaze wear in places. Both the cartouche and bearded face are poorly applied with the right of the face being "swiped" and the bottom of the cartouche also wiped across. A few little potters blow outs. Overall, a great example, most Bellarmines have some form of restoration and so this one in original condition with relatively minor marks considering its age its certainly better than average. Estimate: $400-600
