Frechen Bellarmine Jug with Oak Leaves. (Germany). Pottery. Bellarmine. Fancy wide neck Frechen Bellarmine jug with large bearded man and oak leaves. Salt Glaze. 205 mm. 16th century
Good. (N/A). 60 mm chunk from rear base edge has broken out and been glued back in, this comes up the side about 20 mm and goes under the base about 20 mm as well. 50 mm crack to right of this goes down to the base edge. Little flake or two to the oak leaves. 8 x 7 mm flake to front left base edge. A fabulous piece. Not graded as it is repaired, but with the original piece to the rear, in consideration of the age of this item, this is relatively minor.
The Vendor Notes: In regard to Lot 958 the Bellarmine, I would like to point out that the base has not been damaged and glued back on. In fact the damage was done before the firing process and consequently baked on during the firing process. Damage like that happens sometimes when a worker stacks the kiln and unintentionly knocks a piece but since the vessel was still watertight it was sold as 2nd class pottery.
