Very Good. (N/A). The Wyon family die-sinking business was founded by George Wyon (q.v). in Birmingham in the late 18th century. His son Thomas (senior) moved to London about 1800 and in 1831 he was succeeded by his son Benjamin. The latter (d. 1858) was in turn succeeded by his own sons Joseph Shepherd Wyon (q.v.) and Alfred Benjamin Wyon (q.v.), who joined in partnership in 1865, until Joseph's death in 1873. Medal manufacturers from 1873, under Joseph Shepherd and Alfred Benjamin Wyon. This medallion is a great thing, and quite heavy. Not inscribed with any details for the prize winner. It retains some great shine. Has some knocks and minor marks, but it is a fabulous piece all round. Has Latin on the pictorial side, Orta recens quam pura nites reflecting the rising sun crest of New South Wales, the state's Latin motto is: “Newly risen how brightly you shine”. This is getting close to 150 years old! Estimate: $100-200
