Premier / (Vase on Pottery Stand With Plant Inside) / Pottery. (South Australia). Pottery. Water Filter. Majolica Water Filter With Rope Simulated Handles, Extremely Heavily Embossed Sprigs. Original Lid plus a modern lid made to suit. 2 Gallon or thereabouts. 317 mm without lid. 1900s
Very Good. (7.2). There is a protruding rim above a rope design where the lid sits. This has a series of chips and flakes around the outer circumference. Much of the rear is free of chips, but then much of the front has shallow chips and flaking along this region. Couple of small flat chips to the upper part of the rim where this lid sits. Some of the protruding letters have small flakes, nothing big by any means. The trade mark is simply amazing, it sticks out further than I have ever seen anything protrude on a filter before, roughly 20 mm, though this is hard to measure. Looking inside you can see a couple of hairlines to the inner base region, barely noticeable externally although you may be able to just make out some of it under the base. Crazing throughout from manufacture. Lovely ornate rope style handles. The spigot has a cork inside, there is a small flake to the rope style design on the outer face of the spigot. About a 20 mm crack to left base edge, continues a little under the base, actually, this is associated with the inner hairlines mentioned earlier. 30 x 8 mm chip to right base edge, to the protruding rim immediately below the lower rope design, much along the lines of the upper rim. Absolutely amazing item. This does have the original lid, but it has been broken into several pieces and very roughly and poorly glued back together, in fact, one chunk has detached but still comes with this item. Looks like most of the pieces are still there, so this original lid could be repaired back to a suitable state for this filter. However, this ALSO comes with a purpose made modern lid that was made for the vendor by one of the South Australian potteries in recent years. Whilst this does not match the original lid by any means, it is fit for purpose for this filter. An extremely rare piece of south Australian pottery, I have never seen one of these for sale before, a once in a lifetime opportunity in my mind. Estimate: $5000-7500
