Sold for A$2,600

J & H. No potters stamp. (Attributed to Hindmarsh Pottery, Jones & Harvey, Rundle Street, Kent Town, South Australia). Demijohn. Impressed. Impressed script writing. Dark salt glaze. 1 Gallon. 335 mm. 1870s

Good. (6). Did have a handle which has broken off, has been painted at each end of the break to blend it in. Flat 17 x 12 mm flake to upper front lip. 16 x 9 mm chip to outer front left lip. 10 x 10 mm flake to inner upper front lip. Some little flakes to inner lip edge. Patch of wear to right rear neck. Some minor flakes and wear through the glaze around the shoulder in places. 20 x 14 mm flake to front right base edge. Some other small chips and flakes around the base edge. A few small glaze flakes around the body. One or two short, deep scratches to be found. Some spots of wear here and there. Small potters blow out or two. Fabulous item! This is almost certainly a Hindmarsh Pottery made piece, check out the other HIndmarsh Pottery marked demijohn in this auction to see similarities. As for what J & H stands for, it is believe that this demijohn was made for Jones & Harvey who were in Rundle Street, Kent Town, Adelaide in 1877 and 1878 as the timeframe fits nicely with Hindmarsh Pottery - but again, that is by no means definitive. Regardless, this is an extremely rare demijohn, possibly even unique. Estimate: $1000-1500
