Haussen & Catchlove / Adelaide / 5 Gallons. No potters stamp. (South Australia). Demijohn. Slab Seal. Slab Seal. Two tone with tan top and red body. 5 Gallon. 522 mm. 1860s
Fair. (5). Major lip damage. 52 x 20 mm chunk out of the right lip. 60 x 30 mm chunk missing to the left lip. 20 x 15 mm chip at back of this missing piece. Couple of flakes to outer rear lip. The rest of the demijohn is really good. There are some deepish scratches in places, but that's about it. The slab seal has a minor making split through it which has been glazed, this is nothing major. Haussen & Catchlove took over Crawford & Co's Hindmarsh Brewery in the 1860s, I have a feeling this demijohn dates prior to that? Whatever the case, what an amazing item which I believe is the only one currently known to collectors. A unique colouration with the tan top and reddish coloured body, and one of very few slab sealed Australian demijohns. Don't miss this opportunity to add a unique item to your collection, the lip would be quite an easy repair. Estimate: $1000-1500
