Herring & Co / Adelaide / T. Field / Potter / Sydney. (South Australia). Ginger Beer. Cork Stoppered. Dump shape. Cork stoppered. Impressed. Salt Glaze. 10 oz. 166 mm. 1850s

Very Good. (7). 4 x 2 mm glaze flake to upper front lip. Some small chips to the shoulder have been repaired, exceptionally well! One to the left I can just make out as been painted, this was obviously very minor and shallow prior. Looks like a really little one to the left of this. I can't see any more? There is a little fine wear to the sharp shoulder edge in places. Tiny flake to rear shoulder. Line down the rear body of stain and discolouration this is up to around 15 mm wide, but does vary. Couple of little potters blow outs to the rear. Chip on the base has been repaired according to the vendor. I can see below and to the left of the potters stamp where this has been painted under the base, but I can only see a 5 x 3 mm flake to the base edge that can be seen from the front that has been filled, I think the rest must have been under the base, I am guessing a shallow flake type mark, that was likely a making mark anyway. Paintwork is hard to tell where it starts and stops, my estimate is about 30 x 10 mm entirely under the base. I can also see the rear base edge has had some work, from the side I can see a 17 x 3 mm section that has been filled, which would be a flat flake under the heel, again hard to tell what is painted but maybe 40 x 10 mm, and again, this would have been a flat area. A fine crazed line or two. A little minor discolouration in places. Small potters blow out to front upper right shoulder. The letters on Herring & Co are variable in height, the N which is poorly stamped was a small size. Same with Adelaide, the small E at the end is stamped lighter too. The Field stamp itself is really good, and quite a hard to get stamp with the curved T. Field in large letters. Wonderful example, the stamps line up perfectly and while this has been touched up, it remains an extremely important piece of pottery that is in great show worthy condition. I am not aware of one of these having been sold by auction in recent times, if ever?. Estimate: $3000-4000
