Sold for A$410
Levy Bros / Melbourne. No potters mark. (Victoria) Pottery Australian Large storage jar with fancy toggled patterns to upper region possibly depicting fern fronds. Unusual grey colour. 1 gallon. 287 mm. 1880s
Excellent. An amazing piece of pottery, we have never seen anything like this unique piece before (well, that is what we said in Auction 10 when we sold another one!). This is almost certainly made by an Australian Pottery, the toggle marks could possibly be used to identify the potter. The glaze is very speckled with flecks and dark spots throughout. Small chip to shoulder edge and some little flakes. A few potters blow outs from making. Some fine wear and a few little glaze flakes to base edge. The other one we sold was the same colour and size, but had a rim around the base and the stamp was mid body rather than near the base, so quite different really. Simply an amazing piece of pottery, a once in a lifetime opportunity here (well, better make that twice)! Grade: 8.1 Estimate: $300 - 400
