G. Wilmot / Hop Beer / Colac (in laid on ribbons) // 3 impressed in back near top. (Victoria). Demijohn Barrel Majolica Barrel. Laid on ribbons. Wide mouth top and matching majolica lid. 3 Gallon. 385 mm without lid. 1890s
Very Good. What a sensational item. This is different to the only other one we've sold. The previous one was 2 gallon and had an internal thread top. There are 6 small chips around the upper rim (two have been roughly filled). The chips measure: 24 x 8, 18 x 10, 15 x 9, 15 x 7, 12 x 5 and 10 x 9 mm. Crazing throughout. Some general dirt and grime. The ribbons have had green paint on them, most of which has been cleaned off. Two chips on top of the middle ribbon - 10 x 4 and 7 x 4 mm. The bottom ribbon has a 9 x 3 mm chip under the A of Colac and a 5 x 2 mm chip under the first C of Colac. All these marks are really pretty minor in the overall scheme of things. Lid has 6 x 5 and 3 x 3 mm chips on the outer rim. Crazing with a couple of short fine hairlines. With a cork insert this lid would be a very snug fit on the barrel. Wonderful item, possibly unique in this size. Grade: 7.9 Estimate: $7500 - 10000
