John Burgess & Son / Anchovy Paste. / For Sandwiches, Toast, &c. / Warehouse, 107, Strand / Corner of The Savoy Steps, London. No makers marks. (United Kingdom) Pot Lid Prattware Ceramic pot with red print. 97 mm. 1850s
Very Good. An early pot, John Burgess & Son was named as such from 1827 at the 107 Strand address, this is likely from the mid 1800s. This is lighter weight than the black print version in this auction. We have not sold a red print one before! Some surface rust that will soak out. A bit of discolouration. Left rear shoulder edge has a few tiny glaze nicks over about 15 mm. Front base edge has a little impact with a tiny glaze flake which is discoloured over only 3 x 1 mm. Couple of short and very fine hairlines from this. Crazing throughout. A wonderful pot that should clean up really well, I think quite rare in this red print version? Grade: 7.7 Estimate: $125 - 175
