Charge of the Scotch Greys at Balaklava. Prattware (Mayer) Jar. Indented base. Silver rim added with H. P & S? plus three small other marks. Pot Lid Prattware Heavy squat round jar. Multi-coloured. 90 mm. 1850s+
Ungraded! Depends how you judge it. This jar has been radically altered to how the pottery made it but it has been done early in the piece by the looks of it. The whole lip which would have had a typical rounded wide lip has been very carefully ground back and then a silver rim has been added. Similarly the base has been very evenly ground back at least 2-3 mm right up to the ribbon bearing the title. There is crazing throughout. Some stain. Glaze flaking to one side of the neck. An indent at what is now the base edge looks to be from making. Looks like the modifications have been made so that this jar fits in to some sort of holder or perhaps a cruet of some kind. Interesting item, displays well. Grade: N/A Estimate: $40 - 60
