J. Sherwin. (Tasmania) Pottery Sherwin Two tone, red top, mustard body. Impressed. Small. 137 mm. 1840s
Good. Possible glaze wear around lip, looks like terracotta under it, but base chips show the pottery is not terracotta! Under left base edge is a 15 x 9 mm chip. Right rear base heel has two flake chips which are 23 x 9 mm and 29 x 15 mm. Some crazing. The glaze has a white speckly type of appearance to it, not sure if this is as made or has been infiltrated in some way? When it is moistened the colour darkens somewhat. A great piece of early Tasmanian pottery, this small size is quite a rare item in the two tone colour. There are a few varieties, all of which are sought after. Grade: 6.6 Estimate: $500 - 750
