Nitrolyte Co / Melbourne. No potters stamp. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed All white. Impressed. 1/2 Gallon. 245 mm without stopper. 1950s
Good. The Nitrolyte Co of Australia Pty Ltd were at 516 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne from the 1920s, advertising was only during 1926 and 1927. Fast forward to 1949, this company was again advertising, this time from 130 Hardware Street, Melbourne, but advertising just as the Nitrolyte Co, so likely this demijohn dates to then with this exact wording on the demijohn. Nitrolyte was an electrolyte solution that provided for all normal operations of the battery, yet prevented the rapid deterioration inseparable from the ordinary acid mixture. 22 x 14 mm chip to upper rear lip that is covered totally when the stopper is in place. The glaze has little glaze flakes scattered around which are dark, these are quite heavy around the lip, upper handle and shoulder and would be from the battery acid that this demijohn contained. Some scuffs and scratches. A solid example of this small demijohn, this is a very rare battery acid demijohn, the first we have seen. Grade: 6.4 Estimate: $50 - 75
