Lion Brewery / (Lion) / North Adelaide. No potters mark. (South Australia) Beer Stoneware Applied skirt and collar type top. Shouldered. Slab Seal. Salt Glaze. 26 oz. 238 mm. 1880s
Very Good. Small dint to rear upper lip is glazed and from making. Tiny scrape near this. Shoulder edge has some minor wear in places and one or two little glaze flakes. The slab seal has a 13 mm flake to the outer edge at 3 o'clock, this is not easily noticeable on the shelf. There is also a a making dip near Ade of Adelaide. At about 10:30 there is a very shallow 8 mm flake to the outer edge that cannot be seen when on display. There are a few small, shallow glaze flakes to the lion and nearby, and a little wear to the left face edge of the slab seal. Lion is a little indistinct. Under the right heel is a small shallow flake. 12 x 3 mm scuffed scratch through the glaze to lower right body. Other scuffs and scratches down the right and rear, there are a few more glaze flakes as well. A few other scuffs and scratches to be found. This is actually a really good example of a very rare piece. Of the small number that are known, a majority have repairs of some sort. This is entirely unrepaired and as found, a great item, a great piece of brewery history from South Australia! Grade: 7.3 Estimate: $6000 - 8000
