C. Dunn. No potters stamp. (New South Wales) Ginger Beer Convict Impressed salt glaze convict style ginger beer. 10 oz. 170 mm. 1840s
Very Good. An amazingly crude and wonderful piece of early "convict" style pottery. A huge oversized blob lip for starters, this also has some dints from the kiln. Most of the marks are from making. A chip to the outer rear lip is a kiln kiss as the edge of the chip is protruding above the original surface. Below this on the neck is a dint as well, and then the shoulder has a lump below this. At the front, the right part of the stamp is pushed in from making, then the shoulder edge below this has a slightly pushed in kiln kiss too. Some glaze wear in places around the shoulder. A flake chip under the base is likely a potters pull. Base edge chip seems to be amongst a kiln kiss mark, then there is another kiln kiss to base edge as well. A bit of glaze wear to the body, a few scratches here and there and a little pottery blow out or two. The impression is quite good on this one. Kiln kiss type marks to the right side of the lip as well and maybe a small flake or two. A wonderful bottle, you won't get much cruder than this beast. Grade: 7 Estimate: $1500 - 2000
