Excellent. Very rare in this large size! Shallow surface bubble to lower right. Some dull patches. Remains of capsule around neck. Some scuffs and scratches to be found. This is a sought after bottle from St. Louis, Missouri. An early newspaper article explains: The Union Brewery (better known as Winkelmeyer’s) beginning on the southwest corner of Seventeenth and Market and extending almost to Eighteenth Street, was established in 1845 by Frederick Stifel and Julius Winkelmeyer. Frederick was the older brother of Charles G. and Christoph A. Stifel. The latter was an expert brewer. Winkelmeyer, who till then had been a clerk under Boeschenstein on Main Street, knew nothing about brewing, but he was a very popular person, and so looked after the business of the concern. Business was good, since the product continued to be excellent even after the demise of Stifel, which occurred during the middle fifties. Winkelmeyer married the sister of his partner. As a memorial to his former associate he caused a marble slab with a suitable inscription to be placed at the entrance to the ice cellar of the brewery. When in the middle sixties, Winkelmeyer passed away, a similar marble slab and inscription were placed beside that of Stifel, and her son-in-law, A. W. Straub, who for years now has been president of the International Bank. Grade: 8 Estimate: $750 - 1000
