Sold for A$2,000

W. Frane / Pleasant Creek. No Potters Stamp. (Stawell, Victoria) Ginger Beer Cork Stoppered Dump shape. Salt Glaze. Impressed. 10 oz. 168 mm. 1850s
Very Good. A very rare and early bottle from Stawell in country Victoria. Pleasant Creek was the early name for Stawell. There is some minor lip wear. A little minor wear to the shoulder and again to the base edge. This is about all that has happened after manufacture, so really this should grade higher. There are a couple of making marks though! At the front right base edge is a 13 x 9 mm chip. This, however, is definitely from making with remnants of a dark glaze pool around its edges. At the left rear on the lower body is a similar, but larger mark. This is a 23 x 13 mm chip like mark, amongst a dark glaze pool that has been applied to the surface and obviously chipped off taking the pottery with it in making. The glaze pool extends further down with another flake into the pottery amongst it. A few little glaze pops as well. Some minor glaze wear in places. With this large impression in the middle of the body, this is a great looking piece, and with only making marks really to report, is actually a great example. Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $1500 - 2000
