Lidded tin with unusual external legs. Swallow & Ariell Ltd / Uneeda Bakers / Leckie & Gray Pty. Ltd Melb. (Victoria) (James A. Lerk Collection) Tins Swallow & Ariell Uneeda Bakers Tin. Body is 140 mm high. 1920s
Good. The maker of this tin has an amazing story behind him, Mr. John William Leckie. He served in three different Houses of Parliament, twice as a Federal Minister and as a deputy leader of the Opposition. Prime Minister Menzies was John Leckie's son-in-law! He was born in Alexandra in 1872, went to Scotch College and made a name for himself as an athlete and a footballer. He was a member of Fitzroy's first premiership team! He was one of the founding members of Leckie and Gray who weer based in Richmond. Anyone who had left a mark in any one of those three areas is an interesting part of history, but to be prominent in all three areas is quite amazing! Anyway, back to the tin itself. It has corrosion scattered around. A small dint or two and plenty of rusty scratches. The colours are faded. Very interesting piece, this is part of the James A. Lerk collection. Grade: 6 Estimate: $30 - 40
