Singletons // Sarsaparilla. Base Mark: Dot. (Geelong, Victoria) Spirits Sarsaparilla Applied top. Aqua. 26 oz. 225 mm. 1870s
Very Good. Annealing marks to inner neck. Some patchy light inner stain. Tiny impact flake to base edge, there is however, under this a bruise over about 16 x 10 mm. Surface bubble at base corner. A few scratches, the odd scuffed mark or two and some minor marks. An early looking bottle, this was found in New Zealand many years ago. Research showed this product was imported to New Zealand during 1869 to the early 1870s with Kempthorne, Prosser and Co being agents. Interesting but further investigation led to some early newspaper advertisements centred around Geelong with several different suppliers in the 1870s. But finally the following provides the name of the manufacturer - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/148882435 (Advertising (1869, June 24). Geelong Advertiser (Vic. : 1859 - 1929), p. 2.) - "Singleton's Sarsaparilla can be obtained from all respectable merchants...in the colonies, and wholesale from the manufacturers. E. H. Cole & Co., Wine & Spirit Merchants. An important and early item from the 1860s/1870s, this is the only one known to collectors to date. Grade: 7.4 Estimate: $1000 - 1500
