(Kangaroo & Emu) Union Club / Ships Colonies & Commerce. Base: In a Floral Oval: No 3969 / M & B (Minton & Boyle). (Tasmania)
Notes: The Union Club was in Hobart Town. At the annual dinner of 1841 a newspaper report noted that a new dinner service was used for the first time. "Each article of the dinner service has the colonial emblem of the Kangaroo and Emu painted on it, with the words 'Union Club' in the centre, underneath which is the motto - 'Ships, Colonies, and Commerce.' The then Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemens Land and famed Arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin was in attendance at the dinner. (Source TROVE: The Courier (Hobart, Tas) Friday 23 July 1841. Page 2). Pottery Plate Multi-coloured Porcelain plate. Oval with fancy moulded edges. 220 x 195 mm. 1840-1841

Excellent. Fine scratches to the surface from use. Some wear to parts of the gold leaf. Main design is still brightly coloured and detailed. Lovely print to the middle with a rather rat-like Kangaroo. Stunning piece of colonial history. The combination of the article mentioning the new dinner set at the Union Club with the base mark (Minton & Boyle became Minton & Co in 1841) dates the manufacture of this plate to late 1840 or very early 1841. Grade: 8.7 Estimate: $2000 - 3000
