Shaft and Globe. Base Mark: Pontil. (James A. Lerk Collection) Early Glass Black Glass Shaft and Globe. Black. 220 mm. 1600s
Poor. 140 x 120 mm section to the bulbous part has been glued back into place. There are several cracks across this piece that has been separated from the bottle. The top looks like it may have also been stuck back on. Crack from this down neck to the other glued in piece, there are some other cracks to the body as well. On side is quite good in this respect with most of the problems on the other side. Heavily stained and etched with some scratches. Wear and etching. I have a feeling this damage may be fire damage as it is unlikely that you would find the top and side of such a piece and be able to glue them back together so neatly if they were dug in a tip. Regardless, this is a very significant piece of glass, extremely early, these shaft and globes are amongst the most sought after forms in the United Kingdom. This is from the James A. Lerk collection. Grade: 1 Estimate: $500 - 750
