Primrose / XXX / Ale / Adelaide / S.A. Potters Stamp: John Cliff & Co / Lambeth. (South Australia) Beer Stoneware All white. Impressed. 26 oz. 264 mm. 1860s
Repaired. A superb job. This was found in two or three pieces, but all of it was there. As proof, please see the before repair picture! A superb job, it is very difficult to tell from the front where the join was. At the rear you can just see part of a curved line where the join is, but only when you look extremely closely with the light on the right angle. Some lumps and bumps from making. The Primrose Brewery started in the 1840s and was still being advertised in the 1860s. John Cliff and Co, however, brought Stephen Green's Lambeth pottery in 1858, and so this would date to after then, I would suggest early 1860s. Previously known in the 13 ounce in one or two examples, until now, this was not known in this large size! A very important piece which is a must for any serious brewery collector. I have not graded this at all due to the repair, it is a superb piece in great show quality condition as is. Grade: N/A Estimate: $3000 - 4000
