Sandeman's / Port. No base mark. (New South Wales) (James A. Lerk Collection) Wine Cork Stoppered Applied top. Black. 2 Gallon. 545 mm. 1900s
Excellent. You have not misread - this is 545 mm tall! 2 Gallon, I am not entirely sure, but it holds a LOT! And is HUGE! The badge on the shoulder has Sandeman's Port embossed on it, this is rather weak, but is definitely there. A display piece, in 1900 Messrs. George Sandeman, Sons and Co., of London, were trading in Sydney at 241 Pltt Street, as "Sandeman," they had been awarded the "Grand Prix" for "Ports," and the gold medal for "Sherrles" which was the highest honour bestowed at the Paris Exhibition. This bottle would have been made around that time to capitalise on the success of their port and is quite possibly an Australian made piece for Sandeman in Sydney. This thing weigh a ton! Not literally, but it is heavy. Most unbelievably, it has contents residue staining internally! I would personally not be able to pick this up if it were full of port. Some grime externally. Some of the dullness looks a little like stain of some sort to the lower part of the bottle. Scratches scattered around. Small impact mark to rear shoulder. Making fold near base. Being crudely made, there is also a streak starting at the front right, curving right around the bottle to the front again to the lower left. This is basically one extremely long milky airbubble from making. An exceptionally impressive advertising piece, the likes of which we have never seen before. Part of the James A. Lerk collection, one of the better pieces from this collection. Being so big, this will be over the capabilities of Australia Post and so pick up will be required, or you can arrange a courier.
