J. Isaacs / 2. Barrel with vines around it. Pottery Isaac Salt Glaze. Applied Vines. Impressed. 2 Gallon. 352 mm. 1880s
Good. There is a small chip to the edge of the breather hole at the top. From this is a hairline going down the front over about 130 mm, but the applied vine over the top of this does not have the hairline in this section. The hairline also travels from the hole to the inner lip over about 60 mm. The band of large vines above the middle of the jar has some chips to the ends of some of the leaves and grapes, some making splits and some wear to the high points. Discoloured scrape mark to rear between the two large vine bands. Much like the upper band, the lower band has similar marks. The spigot looks like it has had a repair in the factory! There is wire between the spigot and the body and another band of wear mid spigot in a purpose made groove. It is this wire that seem to be holding in a chunk of about a quarter of the spigot to the bottom left quadrant. It has been like this for a very long time. There is a hairline just above the front base edge over about 140 mm. A fantastic Aussie piece, J. Isaacs were in George Street, Sydney! Grade: 6 Estimate: $400 - 500
