Sold for A$50

J. T. Morton / Provision Merchant / 107, 108 & 109 Leadenhall St / London. Potters stamp: Regd March 1849 / 6 / Powell Bristol. Original lid marked Powell / 4 / Bristol. Pottery Powell Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. Large. 334 mm. 1880s

Excellent. Some fine wear to inner lip and around the patent lip grooves. Small making split to upper lip. Some wear and small impact flakes to lid seat internally. Shallow nibbled pottery blowout to left shoulder. Smaller one lower down the body to front left. Little nicked glaze flake to right lower body. A few shallow flakes under base heel to the left may be potters pulls. Some scratches and grime scattered around. A little bit of fine discolouration. Lines around the jar are deep making marks under the glaze. This is unusual in that it has the original lid. No clamp, but the lid is still more than usual. This has some flakes to the upper edge and chips to the lower part. Very interesting and imposing piece of pottery! The same company that had the blue and aqua salt jars often found in Australia. Not sure what this contained, maybe a bulk salt jar? Grade: 8 Estimate: $40 - 50
