Large glass demijohn. Crude three piece mould type form. Tube pontil scar to base. Black Glass Demijohn Shouldered round wide body. tapering neck. Applied top. Green. Half Gallon or so. 325 mm. 1830s-1840s
Very Good. Difficult to grade in the usual sense because as you can see this has been sea found and there are molluscs and the like still stuck to it. But to clean it would in many ways ruin its appeal! Remarkably light in weight. Beautifully formed. Hazy dullness all around. Some very shallow open bubbles from manufacture around the surface. Striations in the neck. Lovely sharp tube pontil - be careful you can definitely cut yourself on this! All in all a spectacular piece of early glass. (From the Ian Mastin collection whose exceptional still life artwork includes many of these pieces - http://www.ianmastin.com/) Grade: 7.9 Estimate: $200 - 250
