Grigsby & McSweeney / Trade (Bird) Mark / Geelong // M.G.B.Co. (Victoria) Aerated Water Torpedo Applied top. Aqua. 13 oz. 231 mm. 1880s
Very Good. 12 x 10 mm flat section to the right outer blob. Initially I thought this was a ground chip, however, looking at it under magnification there is no evidence of grinding marks around the edges at all. I believe this to be from making, with an irregular surface it also indicates that it is not ground, a ground chip would be flat throughout. There is also a lump on the inner lip in this region. Also, a couple of small marks around from this are similar from making. And to top it off, down from this on the right rear mid body there is a dint to the wide part of the body that is definitely from making and in the same plane, something happened to this piece in manufacture. Shallow 6 x 3 mm surface flake to right near seam, a few little nicks near this. Some inner stain, looks like it will soak out. Left rear body has a small section of deep scratches. Several inclusions, one below Geelong near the seam has a tiny fracture amongst it. A few other scuffs and scratches. One or two little fisheyes to be found. Tiny nick to the lower part of the applied lip. Embossing is great with no marks at all. A rare bottle, one of Victoria's most sought after torpedo bottles. Grade: 7.7 Estimate: $1500 - 2000
