Tobacco Jar: Bird's Eye / (Picture of Lady). Tobacciana Jar Large tobacco jar with tin lid. Painted green with coloured portrait of lady. 230 mm without lid. 1870s
Very Good. A Trove search comes up with several references to Thomas Saywell, 4 Park Street, Sydney in 1878. In 1880, Thomas Saywell advertises that he is still selling his famous Bird's Eye Tobacco at 2 shillings per pound. This fabulous tobacco jar is very heavy. This has a glazed inside. Looking inside, there are a few fine discoloured hairlines. Obviously, these are not visible externally due to the nature of this jar. Externally, this is painted green. There is some wear around the lip through this paint, some flakes through the paint on the body as well, all of which seem to reveal the outside of this jar was not glazed. Small flake or two to base edge. Some stain and discolouration to the paintwork. It has some surface crazing in places. We are not sure who the lady is meant to be? The original tin lid has paint flakes and wear and some corrosion. The inner lid has some deep pitted corrosion. A great piece of tobacciana. Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $400 - 500
