Bendigo Pottery Water Monkey. Pottery Bendigo Terracotta Bendigo Pottery Water Monkey. 255 mm. 1880s
Very Good. From the famous Dennis O'Hoy pottery collection. Although not marked, this is an early piece of Bendigo Pottery. A few chips around the spout. The upper neck is a bit flaky through most of the circumference. Little flake to base. Plenty of tiny flakes to the body throughout, much of this would be the way it was made. Has the original stopper which has some largish flakes to the underside. A very interesting and historical piece of Aussie pottery! This piece features in the book Bendigo Potter Selected Wares from 1857 to the present day by Dennis O'Hoy in 1989. It would have been thrown and is purposefully unglazed. The porous body was designed to keep its contents cool (drinking water). The pottery produced several different shapes, this one (missing its dish) is illustrated in the 1883 and 1915 price lists. A different shape example is on sale in this auction. Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $$400.00 - $500.00
