3 / George St South / J. Isaacs / Sydney // (Applied decoration - Unofficial Australian Coat of Arms) / Advance Australia. (New South Wales) Stoneware Whisky/Whiskey Oval barrel shape. Salt Glaze with dark bands around top and base. Applied decoration to front. 3 Gallon. 382 mm. 1870s
Very Good. There are a couple of small chips around the breather hole at the front top. Down the front there is some wear and rubbing type marks both to the body and the decoration. There is some shallow chipping to about one third of the circumference of the tap hole to the left side. A glazed over small chip to the front left base edge. Not as much wear on the back but some discolouration (there is also some light stain to the front). Between the dark bands at the back there has been a 9 x 9 mm hole drilled. When you look inside you can see the chipping around this hole showing it's been done after manufacture. There are a couple of very small flake chips at the back base edge. A stunning piece of Australian pottery and particularly nice with the Australian coat of Arms design. The small hole at the back suggests it has been used as an electric lamp at some stage. You could get it repaired easily but frankly it's not necessary. Wonderful piece. Grade: 7.9 Estimate: $4000 - 5000
