Sold for A$130

Andrews / & Seddon. No potters mark. (Tasmania) Household Blacking Pottery bottle, embossed. Mustard colour. 4 oz. 128 mm. 1880s

Good. Repaired lip. Andrews and Seddon Blacking and Ink Works began in Wellington Street, Launceston in September 1887. An article in The Tasmanian News on Saturday 17 September 1887 describes the new works. It even goes into detail about the containers for the products being produced locally by Mr John Campbell of the well known Sandhill Steam Pottery Works. Much emphasis was put on the efforts of Andrews and Seddon to support local industry. Back to this item, this Campbell's Pottery made piece is a wonderful piece of history which is very rare. The front lip has a repair to the outer rolled part from just forward of the left seam through to around a similar distance forward of the right seam. There is a fine hairline down from this to the front shoulder. The right shoulder has a making split. A fine hairline comes from this across the front shoulder down near the A of Andrews. Scratch through the glaze from the edge through to the O of Seddon. Flake to rear base edge corner, couple of fine hairlines either side of this are not very long. A few small nicks and flakes to base edge. Lovely colours, lovely piece of Australian history! Grade: 6 Estimate: $200 - 300
