Hannell / T. Field / Potter / Sydney. (Newcastle, New South Wales) Ginger Beer Impressed Dump shape. Impressed. Salt Glaze. 10 oz. 164 mm. 1850s
Excellent. There are several small flakes and glaze wear around the shoulder, a couple of these marks are likely from the kiln. At the back base edge is a roughly filled 14 x 10 mm chip which is pretty shallow however. Around the base edge are numerous little flakes and the like but again several of these at least are definitely from when the bottle was made. Beautiful strong impressions. This bottle is attributed to James Hannell who owned the Ship Inn, Newcastle at the time this bottle would have circulated. James was also Newcastle's and later Wickham's first mayor and a member of the NSW Parliament. This bottle is a significant item from Newcastle's early days. Grade: 8 Estimate: $3000 - 3500
