Very Good. The World's BEST lid! Open to argument of course, but there are many people who will agree. This is the same lid sold through Lancaster auctions a couple of years ago. Much of the gold band remains although there is a fair bit of wear in places. At around 4 o'clock on the rim is a discoloured very fine hairline. This goes towards the print, but becomes invisible to the naked eye as it encroaches on the printed area. Under magnification it can be traced just past the C of scalds, pretty much it is so fine that it can't be seen. Underneath this same line can be seen as it crosses over the flange and travels underneath about 25 mm in from the inner flange wall. This is extremely fine, cannot be felt with the finger at all and blends in with the natural crazing. The lower part of the drooping sleeve on the ladies right arm has an impact mark or scrape through the glaze. This is about 8 x 3 mm, travelling into the blue part of her dress, the middle part of this is not quite through the glaze so some colour remains there. White spot near the O of ointment is under the glaze from making. A little wear in spots to the outer rim. Some little scratches near the lower rim edge on the face, around from this is a small patch of discoloured crazing. Tiny flake to inner flange. Some general discolouration and staining throughout, darkest to the lower parts of the flange underneath. Typical crazing as well. An amazingly impressive piece, these are extremely rare with this being the only example to be publicly sold in recent history. This does not come with a base. Grade: 7.4 Estimate: $25000 - 30000
