1 / Watson & Paterson / Merchants / Melbourne. No potters stamp. Pottery Australian Handled stoneware crock. Salt glaze with dark bands. 1 Gallon. 194 mm. 1880s

Fair. Watson & Paterson were Ham & Bacon Curers, wholesale and export provision merchants. They were located at the corner of Bourke and Queen Streets in Melbourne. They were established in 1862. This is the only example we have seen from this company. This crock has had some work done to it. A section of the rear lip has been repaired. It is difficult to see how much as it is a very good repair. Both the handles appear to have had chip repairs. A fine hairline starts to the right of the upper stamp, this goes down across the middle dark band where it expands to a crack and curves down to the front base. Where it curves, a fine hairline comes from it across to under the right hand handle. The crack goes under and across the base to the base edge under the left handle. Some coating can be seen from the repairs where they have blended them in. An extreme rarity, this would have been made by Bendigo Pottery. It is a great piece of Melbourne history, and Bendigo history. Grade: 5.5 Estimate: $600 - 700
