Three Lamps / (Three Lamps) / Best . Aerated . Waters. Base Mark: Vance & Ross / (VR) / Alexandria. Aerated Water Codd Applied top, tooled finish. Two way pour Niagara style patent with four tear drops. Aqua. 10 oz. 225 mm. 1910s
Very Good. Small nibbled flake to rear upper lip. A little bit of fine inner haze. General scuffs and scratches throughout, most concentrated around the shoulder and base heel, where there are also fisheyes scattered amongst the wear. These are on the main body as well, but not as concentrated. The embossing is crisp, it does have a few fisheyes and some minor high point wear. A couple of discoloured scratches amongst the embossing. Now for the interesting part - where does this come from? We do not know! For many years there has been conjecture as to where the 26 ounce versions come from, as they are found both in Australia and New Zealand. They tend to be found in the Port Hacking region of NSW. They are thought to be from Helensburg, but there is absolutely no proof. To further confuse things, broekn examples have been found in New Zealand, and there is a Three Lamps area in New Zealand, however, the Three Lamps from which the area took the name are visually considerably different to those three lamps pictured on the bottle. New Zealand long time collectors are of the opinion that the bottle is NOT from New Zealand, but again, we have no proof of that either. What we do know, this is extremely rare in the 13 ounce size. There are several of the large ones around. An example of the 13 ounce size was pictured many years ago in the Australian Bottle Review, we do not know where that now is, or even whether that be this same example? This is the only example that has been seen since, if indeed it is a different example at all. An exceptionally rare and desirable piece. Grade: 7.4 Estimate: $2000 - 3000
