Hall & Silcock / Late / Turton & Son / Waratah Pottery Works. Pottery Australian Salt glaze flared mouth bung jar. 237 mm. 1880s

Good. A wonderful piece of extremely rare Australian pottery. 20 x 15 mm chip to left side lip. Some glaze hairlines along through this. Short fine hairline to front neck. Little pottery blowout to shoulder below chip, from this is a hairline going down to the base and spreading in several directions mid body, this is a form of crazing, but it can be felt when running fingernail over it. These lines are more noticeable to the left and rear, but are spread throughout. There is a pottery blow out to the rear as well. The hairlines go under the base and right across, there is a small flake to it in the middle, a section across the middle catches the nail very easily. The partnership of Hall and Silcock was believed to have been short lived, with Silcock remaining for some years afterwards. Hall and Silcock advertised the Waratah Pottery Works from 1886 through to early 1888. The next mention of the pottery is in 1906 onwards when James Silcock uses his own name. All the while, the pottery is advertised as late Turton and Sons. Grade: 6.5 Estimate: $1500 - 2000
