Pot Lid Ointment "Holloway's" style ointment pot. Black & White. 36 mm. 1850s-1860s

Very Good. A wonderful piece of Victorian Goldfields history. Dr L. L. Smith was an early Victorian parliamentarian and heavily involved in the early development of the colony. These ointment pots were made to try to take some of the huge market enjoyed by Holloways. Letters sent to England at the time show the Smith pots and lids were first ordered around 1856-7. On the right lip is a repaired chip measuring 6 x 3 mm. Back around from this is a 12 mm hairline coming down from the top of the lip. Around the base edge are numerous little firing splits and marks. Similarly around the inside of the base are some firing cracks and the like. Another great item from this early Victorian doctor. Grade: 7.8 Estimate: $1200 - 1500
