J. J. Trait / Geelong. No potters stamp. Demijohn Barrel Majolica barrel with slab seals. Multicoloured. 5 Gallon. 445 mm. 1890s
Very Good. A superb and imposing piece. Although not marked as such, this was made by the Bendigo Pottery. The large opening in the top has just a couple of tiny nicks. There are a few little nibbles around the small breather hole in the top. The rear upper rim has two flake chips, 31 x 18 mm and 29 x 25 mm. These have been coloured, but being at the rear are not noticeable. The spigot hole is blemish free. A few little glaze pops to the body from making. The second J on the upper slab seal is half flaked off, the full stop prior to this is worn, the one after has chipped off, with a small 10 x 5 mm chip. Couple of little blemishes to the last T on this seal. The bottom slab seal is fine, a couple of letters have minor flakes to them. Lovely crazing throughout. Some scratches to the glaze. The colours are superb on this large piece, these do not come up for sale very often at all. Grade: 7.3 Estimate: $5000 - 6000
