Original copper printing plates for the pratt lid: The New Houses of Parliament Westminster. Registered by Charles Heaton & Co of London, this bears the British Registration Diamond for 14th March, 1851. There area a set of four plates, one for each colour. Plate 4 has no colour named, but would have been for the black print. Plate 3 was for the pink ink, Plate 2 was Buff and Plate 1 was for Blue ink. These also have a design on the rear for a pratt jar on each of the plates. The registered one is marked to the rear: T. Mayer, Stoke on Trent. A superb piece of history. Excellent. Some scratches and tarnishing. Fabulous piece of history which shows how pratt lids were made, in this case by Mayer. These plates were bought by a firm called Kirkham's in the 1890s who used them to reproduce these pot lids. We have an example of a later Kirkham's lid in this auction. The original lids were made for John Cliff Quince of Cheapside, London and contained toilet cream. Grade: 8.8 Estimate: $300 - 400
