Wm. Champion / Melville Street / Hobart Town. Potters Stamp: Stephen Green / Patent / Double Glaze / Lambeth. Ginger Beer Cork Stoppered All white. Impressed. 13 oz. 162 mm. 1850s
Near Mint. An absolutely superb, crude piece! 8 x 5 mm flake chip under the left rear base edge which is likely from the time when this was removed from the potters wheel. Another 6 x 5 mm example under the left front base edge. The glaze on this piece is nothing short of amazing in its crudity! Around the upper lip there is no glaze. This is not glaze wear, rather it just never had any in the first place. The neck and shoulder have some reasonably small spots where there are dips in the glaze and some minor misses. The left shoulder has a 5 x 3 mm shallow pottery blow out with another smaller one beside it on the shoulder edge. Now it gets interesting! The front has a reasonably solid glaze with some lumps and bumps, as you go around to the right there is a strip of patchy glaze where some spots have none at all, and then you go around to the left rear where there is a large area where there is either no glazes or very patchy glaze. Again, this is not wear at all, but simply a very poorly applied glaze from manufacture which makes this an extremely unique and amazing bottle! A must for any collector of Tasmanian bottles, even if you have an example of this type. Grade: 9.2 Estimate: $1250 - 1500
