Not Sold

Hall & Sons / Norwood / Jas Turton / Maker (Note that the Hall & Sons Norwood has been deliberately smoothed over while the clay was soft, quite interesting and unusual manufacture). Ginger Beer Impressed Blob top. Dump shape. Salt Glaze. 10 oz. 174 mm. 1870s-1880s

Fair. Heavy chips around the top, only one small section of the original top of the lip remains and it is worn. Wear and small chips around the shoulder. Also has chips around the base. Clearly a smaller bottle to the other Hall/Turton ginger beer listed. This one has a most interesting stamp to the shoulder. The potter has run a knife or similar flat blade over the Hall & Sons stamp, obliterating most of it. It would seem that as the potter was making it he has realised this was not part of Hall's order and has removed the stamp very roughly before sending to the kiln. Despite the damage and roughness this is a wonderful piece of early South Australian pottery history. Grade: 5.5 Estimate: $100 - 150
