G. H. Billson / (Shield) Trade (Crossed Axes) Mark / G. H. B / Melbourne // M. G. B. Co. Base: B. Aerated Water Cork Stoppered Tall corker (probably a Hop Beer or similar product). Applied wrap top. Aqua. 26 oz. 312 mm. 1890s-1900s
Excellent. A spectacular looking bottle and very rare with this wrap top finish (usually seen with a blob top). There is a line of stain on the inner lip which is residue from where the cork has been. Interesting potstone in the front lip with a very minor heat fracture coming from it. On the front shoulder is a surface bubble from manufacture that covers 13 x 5 mm and really is just a rough area of glass. Near the front base below the L of Melbourne is a more regular 5 x 4 mm burst bubble. A shallow burst bubble under the rear base. A little bit of dirt internally mainly near the base. Some minor scuffs and scratches to the surface. Embossing is superbly strong and clear with little if any wear, only a few letters have some minor marks. Stunning bottle. Grade: 8.9 Estimate: $250 - 350
