Cherry / Tooth Paste / H. Francis & Co / 31. Bourke St. East / Melbourne. (With correct base printed "Maw / England / London" underneath). Pot lid Tooth Paste White rectangle lid with black print and gold leaf border. Lid No. 20 "Collecting Australian Pot lids" by Robert Keil. 70 x 63 mm. 1890s
Excellent. Superb lid! Still has remnants of the gold border around the outer rim. Pretty much not even a mark to be seen on the face of the lid! Around the lower part of the flange is a yellow discoloured line, this is remnants from when the lid was taped to the base and scrapes off quite easily. The left side under the flange has a small flake on the outer edge, 4 x 2 mm and very shallow. The bottom side under the flange has a tiny 2 x 1.5 mm flake on the inner flange, and then on the very corner on the outer edge is a tiny 3 x 1.5 mm flake. A couple more tiny nibbles. These are all miniscule and only just through the glaze, they do not detract in any way from this superb lid. This does come with a matching base, the base has the same tape residue on it, some minor flakes and some discoloured crazing. Grading for lid only. This is an amazingly rare lid in prime condition - even retaining a trace of the gold border! As far as we are aware, this is the first example to ever be offered at auction. Grade: 8.9 Estimate: $3000 - 4000
