Allen,s Patent (N is reversed) / Foot Rot Ointment / Sole Proprietor / Mowling & Dunkley (M is illegible) / 57 Elizabeth St / Melbourne. Miscellaneous Stoneware Roll lip, two tone square shoulder salt glazed jar with brown top and neck and tan body. 144 mm. 1868-1871
Very Good. The most important thing with this piece of Melbourne history - it still has the contents and cork, although the cork has shrunk and can be removed. There is a shallow flake to the upper right lip, 11 x 5 mm, with another tiny nick on the opposite lip which is 3 x 1 mm but only just through the glaze. The shoulder edge has some extremely minor wear in a couple of small spots, this blends in well as the glaze is naturally light on this edge. There is a tiny flake above the upper writing on the edge of the impressed panel from manufacture, 2 x 1 mm. Around the base to the rear is a small flake on the side, x 3 mm and shallow. One the left side under the base is a large shallow chip, 50 x 14 mm, mostly underneath, this can be seen from the side as well, but appears only 24 x 8 mm from the side. There are a few other small pulls under the base, most likely from manufacture. This is a great and early piece from Melbourne which is quite hard to get, with the original contents like this it is a must have for any serious collectors! Grade: 7.7 Estimate: $400 - 500
