T Field / Potter / Sydney. Ginger Beer Impressed Dump shape, blob top, salt glaze. Amber/red glaze with black splotches. 13 oz. 166 mm. 1850s
Very Good. Whilst there are many marks on this, many of them are likely from manufacture of this extremely crude piece. The upper lip has a sliver flake, over 20 mm, but very narrow at each end, only widening out to 3 mm at the worst. 4 x 3 mm glaze flake on opposite lip and a couple of other minor lip marks, including a small glaze flake to outer lip. Some wear and glaze flakes around the shoulder, one is at one of the black splotches, and so would definitely be from manufacture. Body of bottle has pottery blow outs in a line going from left rear side, diagonally down across the front. There is a 6 x 4 mm blowout to the front above the stamp in this line, around to the right side at the end of the same line another blowout is 8 x 4 mm. There are a series of other small flecks and tiny glaze flakes as well, almost certainly all from manufacture. There are a few flakes around the base, including a very shallow under base flake. In reality, this is a great example of a super crude, and early piece of Australian pottery in a relatively unusual glaze colour. Grade: 7.9 Estimate: $75 - 100
