A. A. W. & / B. Co Ltd / Adelaide / & / Port // Empress Patent / 4 / Sole Makers / Dan Rylands Ld / Barnsley. Smooth base. Aerated Water Patent Codd original shape with single teardrop but with ovoid (football) shape "marble". Applied top. Aqua. 10 oz. 235 mm. 1890s
Good. Polished. Has a 6 x 4 mm discoloured bruise in the top of the side lip. There is some dark residue caught in the original grooves from manufacture in the lower inner lip. This actually looks like oil that has been in the bottle when it was polished and it has burnt slightly and got stuck here, a good soak in some sort of chemical cleaner might be able to loosen and remove this. Bottle was obviously quite heavily pitted before polishing and still retains evidence of a lot of these sort of marks and fisheyes. There is a noticeable bruise associated with a small chip on the W of the front embossing that measures about 3 x 3 mm. Seam line is largely gone on one side but the other is quite prominent. Embossing has been protected during polishing and is strong. Internal chamber is pitted where marble has been hitting the side. Slightly scaly inside. Still a good example of a rare and unusual patent in Australia complete with the egg shaped marble. Grade: 6.75 Estimate: $300 - 400
