2 / J. Newman & Co / Guilford. No potters stamp but attributed to Bendigo Pottery. (Guildford, Victoria) (Votava Collection) Pottery, Bendigo Large wide mouth salt glaze tub. Applied handles to sides. Lines of decoration. Groove around outer lip. 2 Gallon. 223 mm tall, about 300 mm diameter at the top 1860s - 1870s
Very Good (7.8). The top part of the outer lip has small chips and flakes all the way around. Thin 150 mm hairline down the right front, can be seen on the inside as well. Two interesting bands of wear inside the top where I presume some form of lid has rubbed. Lots of crude making marks around. Little bit of wear and the like. Unique piece of Australian pottery. The company J. Newman & Co ran from around 1866 to 1875 with different members involved over those years. Newman himself left in 1875 and helped start a major brewery and distillery at Castlemaine. This exact item is shown on both Page 243 of Bendigo Pottery, A selection of wares from 1858-1990 by Ken Arnold and Page 215 of Australian Pottery the first 100 years by Geoff Ford. Estimate: $3000-4000
